Policy Statement

The Probationary Observation Period is intended to give new employees the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to achieve a successful level of performance and conduct. The College uses this period to evaluate employee capabilities, work habits and overall performance. Either the employee or the College may end the employment relationship. The probationary observation period shall not create an expectation of continued employment.

All regular full-time and part-time newly hired non-unit employees and employees rehired following a break in service are subject to a probationary observation period of up to 180 calendar days.

Employees who are promoted or transferred within the college are subject to a probationary observation period of up to 180 calendar days. Probationary period employees impacted by an approved leave of absence will have their probationary time adjusted after returning to ensure a probationary observation period of up to 180 days.

A review of the employee’s performance and conduct during this probationary observation period must be completed and sent to the Office of Human Resources 10 business days prior to the end of the probationary period. In the event an employee does not perform satisfactorily or conduct themselves appropriately during this period, his/her employment with the College will be terminated.
